Today’s card was inspired by a block from this quilt. My mom was a very talented hand quilter and owner of The Moses House Quilt Shop in Keene NH. She passed away in 2003. Just like most quilters, she had many projects going at the same time. When she passed away these projects became the property of my sister, Debbie, who like me is also a quilter. These projects became fondly known as “UFO’s” or “UnFinished Objects” (Mom would have loved this). Recently, Debbie recruited the assistance of a long time family friend who is also a hand quilter. There were 3 unfinished blocks which Kathy finished. Debbie then put the quilt together, machine stippled for the finishing, and gave it to me as a gift. Pretty cool, right?

When designing a card, card layout inspiration often comes from images, photos, or items around us. Today’s card is a demonstration of how this can work. The colors chosen for this card come directly from the quilt colors. When choosing a sentiment, the Everything About You stamp set with the large “I LOVE” stamp spoke to me, not only because of the everlasting love I have for my mom, but for the sister who brought this gift to me.

To make this card I used a ruler and pencil to draw a line 1.25 inches from the left border of the front card panel (this is demonstrated in the video – see link above). I then attached a mask using scrap card stock and low tack tape to keep the stamped images off the card front left of this line. Using the vine and leaf stamp from “Amazing You” stamp set, I stamped leaves down the right of this line. During this stamping I focused on placing the stamped images so it appeared as though the vines the leaves grew on were coming from “behind” this line. Once stamped, I glued a 1/8″ strip of black card stock over the pencil line. I then colored the leaves using Copic markers.

The flowers were colored using Copic markers, they were cut out using my Scan ‘n Cut machine and attached to the bottom left of the card, lying over the black strip of card stock.

The I LOVE sentiment is heat embossed in black embossing powder as is the “EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU” sentiment. The strip of card stock holding the “everything about you” is raised using foam tape and was placed over the lower half of the “I LOVE” sentiment. Black matt dots were added to complete the card front. This card front is the same size as an A2 card: 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″. It is glued to the front of the card base.

I encourage you to look around you to find inspiration for you card designs. Thank you for joining me…
